Hump Day Thoughts on Sports – 8/1/12

01 Aug

by Steve Farace

There is no other trade deadline like the MLB trade deadline. There are so many rumors and what ifs and buyers and sellers. This year there are more teams that feel that they are in the hunt because of the second wild card spot. My Mom still does not understand the concept of one wild card team and now that there is a second wild card I have given up on explaining it to her. There were winners and losers of this years trade deadline, so let’s get to that and all of the other happenings in sports this past week, eh?

The Angels absolutely solidified their rotation with the pick-up of Mr. Zack Greinke. Wow…a rotation that includes Weaver, Wilson, Greinke and Haren (whenever he decides to get healthy and be Dan Haren) is very scary when it comes to the playoffs. Would the Yankees, Tigers, Rangers or Athletics want to see that come playoff time? I doubt it.

Hmm…what did they Yankees do? Known for the big deal they got…drum-roll please…Casey McGehee! Bam!! A classic Yankee blockbuster! The Yankees actually sat and watched as the Angels got better, the Rangers (Dempster) got better, and the Tigers added pieces (Infante/Sanchez). It just feels weird.

The Marlins did what the Marlins do. They got rid of players in order to clear up some salary from the books. They did, however, decide to hang on to Josh Johnson because teams wouldn’t bite on the astronomical price they were asking given his recent performance and his injury history. Now, will the Marlins re-invest that money that they saved on Hanley and Infante/Sanchez this off-season? Who knows…but my money is on no. What have the Marlins done in their past that would say otherwise?

How about them Dodgers?? Ownership said who cares about the money – go make the team better. That’s what they did in getting Hanley and  Victorino and solidifying their bullpen. The Dodgers are looking like a really scary team right now. They will need to be scary if they want to contend with the Nationals, Braves, Reds and Pirates. Could HanleyWood be the future home of the World Series champs? Time will tell.

The US Mens basketball team just steamrolled Tunisia. What a surprise. This team is being led by the best player in the world, Mr. Lebron James, what else should be expected? USA!

Jerry Sandusky is “distraught” about what Penn State is going through? Really? Are you serious? You molested young boys and you are upset about what Penn State is going through?? Unbelievable. Shut your mouth and go serve your time and rot in that jail cell. Appreciate it.

That’s about all for this week! Hope your hump day is going well and that you’re on your way to an enjoyable weekend! If I missed something or if you’d like to battle it out on something you didn’t agree with feel free to leave a comment!

Talk to you guys next hump day!
