Hump Day Thoughts on Sports – 5/30/12

30 May

By Steve Farace

Ready for a new weekly article? Yeah, we are too. So from here on out we will be exploring what has happened in the week in sports every hump day! Hump day is Wednesdays because it is the day that gets us over the hump of the week (for all you pervs out there). Let’s do it!

The Miami Marlins just keep on winning. They are getting timely hitting and good pitching and they are now tied with the Mets for second place in the division and are only 1 ½ games out of first.

The San Antonio Spurs have continued to bulldog their way through the playoffs. They are now 10-0 in the playoffs and have not lost a game since 4/11! Think about it – the only reason they were losing any games at that time is because they were resting their big 3. The Spurs are playing very well and very intelligently and they should be getting the respect they deserve!

Terrell Owens has been cut again. Blah blah blah lack of effort blah blah blah. What else is new?

Josh Hamilton continues to rake – this guy has been playing out of this world so far this year and now has a MLB leading 21 homeruns. This man is a free agent after this season and he is playing like he wants to get paid!

We don’t cover the NHL much on the site, but the NY Rangers were eliminated by the NJ Devils and their 40 yr old goalie. The Devils move on to face the Kings in the Stanley Cup Finals and both teams have been mentioned in sales talks. Is that the first time in history that both teams in a championship have been mentioned as possibly being sold?

Let’s piggy-back on that for a moment. There have been rumors that the Yankees might be up for sale. Now, I doubt this would happen any time soon, but with the recent sale of the Dodgers at $2.5 billion, Hal and company have to at least take a look to see what they could get for the team, no?

The Miami Heat are going to have their easiest round yet here with the Celtics. The Celtics look old and worn down and Rondo has been the only guy not looking like he is going to pass out. Well that was only game 1, but still. Rondo has stated that the Heat will have to start “hitting the deck”. Let’s see if the Celtics follow through on that threat by their star point guard.

How easily can things change for a Major League Baseball team? VERY quickly. This week two teams that figure to contend this year lost their aces. Roy Halladay (or the Nuke as we call him in our fantasy baseball team because he can be so explosive) will be gone for 6 – 8 weeks for the Phillies and Jered Weaver has hit the DL for the Angels.

Roy Oswalt has finally come out of hibernation and signed on with the Texas Rangers. The Rangers have the need, but I think they are taking a chance here. Oswalt was only 9-10 last year for the Phillies and moving to the AL won’t help his cause.

Moving away from sports for just a moment – in some very sad an disturbing news out of Miami, it seems as though drugs had everything to do with a mans face being nearly completely eaten off by another man. The photos are gruesome and the stories coming from witnesses are simply unbelievable. What is the world coming to when humans are eating other humans? Isn’t this only supposed to happen in the movies when there is no alternative? The Walking Dead seems to have just come to life.

That’s about all for this week! Hope your hump day is going well and that you’re on your way to an enjoyable weekend! If I missed something or if you’d like to battle it out on something you didn’t agree with feel free to leave a comment!

Talk to you guys next hump day!
