Sunday in the NFL was Championship Sunday. We found out who the two teams would be in the Super Bowl to be played in Indianapolis on Sunday evening on February 5, 2012. In the AFC Championship the New England Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 and in the NFC Championship the New York Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 in overtime. It will be the rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl, New York Giants against the New England Patriots.
Watching both of these games and being a Philadelphia Eagles fan it went through my mind, where do the Philadelphia Eagles stand compared to these four teams. Going into this season there was so much expectations for the Eagles. Most experts had picked the Eagles to end up in the Super Bowl. As we all know that promising season ended with no playoff appearance. Are the Philadelphia Eagles as good as these four teams that played on Championship Sunday?
The four remaining teams that played on Sunday have talent but the Philadelphia Eagles have better talent on both sides of the ball. Now the remaining teams have quarterbacks who run their teams system, play good defense, and are all well coached These three things put these teams above the Eagles right now. Eagles had coach Andy Reid did have an opportunity to correct a mistake that he made by hiring former offensive line coach Juan Castillo as the defensive coach and bring back former coach to the staff Steve Spagnuolo as the new defensive coordinator but again Andy and his ego dropped the ball and Spags went to the New Orleans Saints as their new defensive coordinator.
Michael Vick the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles is an excellent quarterback and this season he had a bad season. It did not help that he had injuries. Is Vick the right quarterback for the Eagles offensive system. What he did in 2010 season did answer that question and that is yes. The key to Michael Vicks success is for him to be healthy. If Vick gets hit like he did this season well the injuries will continue. The four teams that played in the Conference Championships also have very good defenses. Well that is a huge question mark for the Philadelphia Eagles. I don’t know how much I can buy into the fact that the Eagles played well on the defensive side of the ball in the last four games because they did play teams that had losing records. I will say this, they did look better and they seemed to know what was going on. They did not appear to be lost.
The biggest difference between the four remaining teams and the Philadelphia Eagles is the head coach. Those teams are very well coached and well the Eagles. Andy Reid is now going to be in his 14th season as head coach of the Eagles. Andy still makes the same mistakes and has not corrected them. The play calling is very questionable and the time management is bad.
Andy Reid is the total key and problem with this team. He needs his team to play as a team and really have his back. The 2011 Philadelphia Eagles had too many “I” guys and that does not win championships. They are going to have to get rid of some of those I players if they want to be on the same level as the final four teams that played on Sunday. They are also going to need a new head coach. Andy Reid has gotten the Philadelphia Eagles to the point of slamming that door in but they can not do it under Reid. They need new blood and a new system to get them over the hump. Oh I know that when Andy Reid does not make the playoffs the following year he gets to the Conference Championship Game but how many times has he been to that stage. It is time for the Eagles to win the Super Bowl and it will not happen in 2014 unless Andy Reid changes. Well it looks like he has not with Steve Spagnuolo going to the New Orleans Saints. Andy get back from vacation and figure it out because where Eagles fans sit right now we are going to continue to see the same old song and dance.
