So what did your Detroit Tigers do this off-season? They were able to sign, in most people’s opinion, the second best catcher in all of baseball when they inked Victor Martinez to a contract. That is a rather large pick up for them because that makes their lineup even better than last year. Whenever you have a Miguel Cabrera type player and are able to sign someone the caliber of a Victor Martinez, you are doing something right. They brought Johnny Peralta over from the Indians and they hope to see Scott Sizemore prove himself this year after a dreadful 2010 showing. Brandon Inge rounds out the infield at third base. In the outfield they have Magglio Ordonez, Austin Jackson and Brennon Boesch (who one of the fantasy baseball owners in my league admitted to having a man crush on). How does this rotation sound to you? Justin Verlander, Max Sherzer, Rick Porcello, Brad Penny and one TBD? It sounds just “ok”. After Verlander there are a lot of “if this and if that’s” that pop into your mind. In my opinion, Brad Penny should be in the NL, but I’m just an average Steve from Brooklyn.
The Tigers will be good again in 2011, but the question is will they be good enough? My answer is no. After a tough battle with both the Twins and White Sox for the division and the Rays and Twins for the wild card, the Twins will fall short of making the playoffs in 2011. Sorry for the cut and paste…it just felt right.
